TL;DR: AI Overviews on branded searches

  • How common are AI Overviews on branded searches now? Ahrefs’ monthly average for U.S. desktop branded results rose from 61.3% in July to 73.3% in September 2026, and hit 82.91% on September 29.
  • Where do they sit on the page? In Ahrefs’ 100-brand panel, 48 of 63 branded AI Overviews appeared in position one.
  • Who do they cite? Wikipedia, YouTube, and LinkedIn led the external citations, so third-party pages can shape your brand’s first impression.
  • What should you do? Run the Branded SERP Audit on your highest-value branded queries, then establish a reporting baseline before you read anything into a branded traffic change.

Search your company’s exact name on Google. The first thing you see may be an AI-written summary of your business, citing pages you did not write. Ahrefs found AI Overviews on branded searches reaching 82.91% of tracked U.S. desktop results on September 29, 2026, making AI-generated answers an increasingly common part of the branded search experience.

For marketing managers, the shift changes what branded search visibility means. Ranking first for your own name no longer tells you what a buyer actually sees or which sources Google trusts to describe you. Here’s what changed, what it means for your brand, and how to run a three-step Branded SERP Audit this week to check and improve how Google represents your business.

How common are AI Overviews on branded searches now?

AI Overviews are appearing far more often on branded Google searches. Ahrefs found their monthly prevalence rose from 61.3% in July to 73.3% in September 2026, based on 232.8 million U.S. desktop search-result crawls that included 92.5 million branded-keyword crawls.

Ahrefs data showing AI Overviews on 61.3% of branded searches in July 2026, 65.1% in August, 73.3% in September, and 82.91% on September 29.

Table view

Period Branded results with an AI Overview
July 2026 average 61.3%
August 2026 average 65.1%
September 2026 average 73.3%
September 29 snapshot 82.91%

Source: Ahrefs, U.S. desktop crawls, July to September 2026.

The September 29 snapshot of 82.91% runs higher than the monthly average because the rate kept climbing through September. This crawl counts branded keywords of every kind; the next section covers bare brand names through Ahrefs’ separate panel.

A second tracker points the same way. DemandSphere recorded branded AI Overviews climbing from 26.12% on September 1 to 90.48% on September 27 across all markets and devices. It counts an AI Overview as present whether or not the overview cites the brand, so its method differs from Ahrefs’ and the shared direction, not the exact level, is the signal.

Our July 2025 study of 2.37 million keywords found that brand modifiers were associated with lower AI Overview prevalence, particularly in longer searches. The datasets and methodologies are not directly comparable, but the newer findings give businesses good reason to reassess their branded search results.

Google has not publicly explained why AI Overviews are increasingly appearing on branded searches or announced a specific rollout date for the change. In Ahrefs’ data, the gap between branded and non-branded AI Overview prevalence narrowed from 12.2 percentage points in July to just 5 points in September.

Why do AI Overviews on branded queries matter for your business?

AI Overviews on branded queries matter because they shape what a potential customer sees first, which details appear prominently, and which outside sources Google draws from to describe you.

Third-party sources can shape your brand’s first impression

Major third-party platforms frequently appear among the sources Google cites in branded AI Overviews. In Ahrefs’ panel of 100 global brands, Wikipedia appeared in 41 of 57 available source lists (71.9%), YouTube in 22 of 57 (38.6%), and LinkedIn in 13 of 57 (22.8%). These figures show the share of available source lists citing each domain, not of all citations.

That is worth paying close attention to because those pages can carry outdated descriptions, thin information, or details you would word differently. YouTube and LinkedIn give you some control, since you can manage your own channels and company pages, while a Wikipedia entry is harder to influence. Review which third-party sources Google cites for your brand, and confirm how many you manage.

Ranking first doesn’t guarantee complete branded search visibility

A top organic ranking no longer means you own the top of the page. In Ahrefs’ separate 100-brand sample, 48 of the 63 branded AI Overviews recorded on September 30 appeared in position one, a 76.2% share. Ahrefs does not define position, so the data does not confirm whether each brand’s own listing moved down the page.

For your branded search visibility, a rank-tracking dashboard showing you first for your brand name describes only part of the page. Evaluate the AI answer alongside your organic rankings to see what a buyer actually gets.

More AI Overviews don’t automatically mean fewer clicks

A rise in AI Overview prevalence is not the same as a proven traffic loss. Ahrefs’ brand-name panel does not report clicks, so its findings cannot show whether these AI Overviews reduced visits for the sampled brands. Competitor involvement was also limited, with two of 58 readable answers discussing a competitor and a single verified competitor-owned site across 57 source lists.

Treat the prevalence data as a prompt to measure, not evidence of lost traffic, and set a performance baseline before you attribute any branded traffic change to AI Overviews.

How to audit AI Overviews on branded searches

You can audit branded AI Overviews by identifying your most valuable branded queries, reviewing Google’s answers and citations for each, and prioritizing fixes based on what you find. We call this three-step framework the Branded SERP Audit, and it turns a vague worry about your brand name into a dated record you can act on and repeat.

Step 1. Identify your highest-value branded queries

Start by listing the branded searches that carry the most weight for trust and conversions. Pull them from Google Search Console’s branded queries filter where it is available to you, then prioritize the searches below.

  • Exact brand name
  • Brand + reviews
  • Brand + pricing
  • Brand + products or services
  • Brand + alternatives
  • Brand + locations

Keep the list to around 20 queries so you can check them consistently month over month.

Step 2. Review Google’s AI-generated answers and citations

Search each query and record what Google shows, under consistent conditions you note each time. The checklist below covers what to capture.

Branded SERP Audit checklist covering AI Overview presence, placement, brand accuracy, citations, owned sources, and search conditions.

Table view

What to audit What to record
AI Overview presence Does an AI Overview appear?
Placement Where does it sit in the results?
Brand description Does Google describe the business accurately?
Citations Which websites does Google reference?
Owned sources Does Google cite your site or official profiles?
Information accuracy Are important details outdated or missing?
Observation details Date, device, and search location

Keep dated screenshots of each result, since the AI Overview can change. To monitor citations and sentiment across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity at scale rather than by hand, OmniSEO® tracks your brand and benchmarks you against competitors.

Step 3. Correct information gaps and prioritize improvements

Start with the brand information you control. If Google’s AI Overview carries outdated or inaccurate details about your business, review your website and official profiles before you chase corrections on external sites. Use the sequence below to prioritize your fixes:

Four priorities for improving branded AI Overview accuracy, including correcting official information, filling content gaps, updating third-party sources, and monitoring results.

Table view

Priority  What to check What to do
1. Correct official information Homepage, about page, service pages, and business listings Fix inaccurate or inconsistent details about your business.
2. Fill information gaps Missing product, service, pricing, or company information Strengthen your website and official profiles with clear, current information.
3. Address third-party sources Outdated or incorrect information on external sites Contact publishers or update the profiles you manage to request corrections.
4. Monitor results AI Overview descriptions, citations, and placement Save dated screenshots and repeat the audit monthly.

Prioritize anything that shapes a buying decision, especially wrong pricing, product details, service availability, or a misleading company description.

Updating your sources does not guarantee Google will change its AI Overview, and you cannot edit the answer directly. Keep monitoring the result to catch improvements and any inaccuracies that remain, and build the signals that help AI tools identify and trust your brand as you go.

“If an AI Overview is pulling in outdated or incorrect info from third-party sites, the priority should always be tightening up your own first-party sources first, like your local listings, homepage and about pages, and your brand information across your other content. Google leans heavily on these trusted signals to verify brand data. Once your own house is in order, you can look into updating the third-party platforms, but you’ll have more leverage in correcting those external sources once your own primary brand presence is fully optimized and consistent.”

How can you measure branded search traffic as AI Overviews expand?

Measure branded search traffic by watching your branded performance data alongside your AI Overview visibility, not in place of it. No single report shows an AI Overview’s effect on a branded query, so you have to read several together and compare them over time.

In Google Search Console, use the branded queries filter where available to track impressions, clicks, click-through rate, and average position for branded searches. The generative AI report shows how often your links appeared inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, though it has no query dimension, so it cannot isolate brand-name searches, and a brand mention without a link to your site does not count as an impression.

In Google Analytics 4 and your revenue tracking, follow branded organic outcomes, conversions, and revenue against a baseline. RevenueCloudFX ties your tracked organic traffic through to leads and revenue. Compare those outcomes with your branded Search Console trends before treating a drop in clicks as lost pipeline. A branded traffic change may coincide with rising AI Overview exposure, but correlation alone does not prove causation.

FAQs about AI Overviews on branded searches

Do AI Overviews appear for every branded search?

Not always. Appearance varies by query, device, location, and the conditions of each search. Ahrefs found most tracked branded results showed one in late September 2026, but prevalence shifts day to day, which is why a dated, repeated check beats a single snapshot.

Can AI Overviews reduce branded website traffic?

They can affect clicks, though the branded research here did not measure it. Ahrefs’ earlier work found a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page when an AI Overview appears, but that covered searches generally rather than branded queries. Compare your own branded clicks against dated AI Overview checks to see your real effect.

Can competitors appear in AI Overviews on branded queries?

It happens, though it was uncommon in Ahrefs’ sample. Two of 58 readable answers discussed a competitor, and only one verified competitor-owned site appeared across 57 source lists. Checking your own branded AI Overviews is still worth doing, since your results may differ from a panel of large global brands.

How often should businesses audit branded AI Overviews?

Monthly works for most brands, run against your priority queries. Add an extra check after any significant change to your brand, your website, or the search platform itself, since any of those can shift what the AI Overview says or cites.

See what Google says when customers search for your brand

Your buyers are forming an impression of your brand inside Google’s AI answer before they ever reach your site, and third-party pages you do not control are helping write it. Run the Branded SERP Audit on your highest-value branded queries, check what the AI Overview says and which sources it cites, then correct what you can and set your branded search traffic baseline. That turns a blind spot into a reporting line you can defend to leadership.
