Frequently Asked Questions
Calculating keyword density is fairly simple, and only requires you to consider two numbers.
The two numbers you'll need before manually calculating your keyword density are:
- Number of times the target keyword appears in your content
- Total number of words on the page of content
After you have those two numbers, you'll simply divide the number of times your target keyword appears on a page by the total number of words on that page. The number you end up with is your keyword density.
The equation will look like this:
Number of times the keyword appears / Total number of words on the page = Keyword density
Keyword density is the number of times you use a target keyword on a webpage. The figure is in relation to the total number of words on page.
So, for example, if you use your target keyword twenty-five times on a 500-word article, your keyword density will be different than if you use the keyword twenty-five times on a page with 1000 words.
Keyword density is often expressed as a percentage and is useful to search engines since it helps them determine if your content is relevant to a specific query.
Calculating keyword density is important because keywords help search engines like Google determine a URL's relevance. Businesses often make one of the following mistakes when integrating keywords, though:
- Underuse keywords where Google sees the URL as not being relevant to user searches related to your target keyword.
- Overuse keywords where Google sees the URL as practicing keyword stuffing and hurting the user experience.
Both of the above instances result in a URL that's less visible in search experience. That's why it's important to calculate keyword density and understand where your keyword usage lands.
If it's easy enough to calculate your keyword density manually, why should you use a keyword density calculator?
- It's fast: If you have to manually calculate your keyword density for a few pages, it likely won't take that much time. But if you're auditing your entire website for keyword density, you'll find yourself performing math equations repeatedly. With a keyword density calculator, you can quickly calulate the keyword density of multiple pages in minutes.
- It's accurate: You won't have to worry about miscounting the keywords on your page, or the total word count of your content. With a keyword density calculator, you can rest assured that the numbers we use in our equations are 100% accurate. Our math is always right, too!
Every piece of content, every topic, and every industry is different. That said, there is no magic number when it comes to keyword density.
That said, the recommended keyword density hovers somewhere between 0.5% and 2.5% — staying below 3%.

Get started with WebFX’s Keyword Density Checker by:
- Entering your URL or text
- (If using URL) Selecting whether to include the URL’s meta tags, titles, and alt tags in the calculation
- Reviewing your results
Interpret your results by looking at your “Keywords Density” results, focusing on the multi-word outputs. Your target phrases should sit between 1-3% density and show “Yes” in the “Title”, “Description”, and “H*” columns. Anything higher than 10% indicates keyword stuffing.
The difference between top keywords and keywords density is top keywords show your most frequent terms and their placement on your page while keywords density shows the frequency count and percentage of the total word count within the highlighted phrases.
Yes! Keyword density matters to generative engine optimization because it helps LLMs (like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews) understand a URL and its purpose.
