  • Join Harrisburg Young Professionals (HYP) for networking, social events, professional development, volunteering, leadership opportunities, and recreational sports.
  • Get involved with interest-based groups like sports leagues, running groups, arts and theater communities, book clubs, and other interest-based groups.
  • Volunteer with local organizations like the Central PA Food Bank, Bethesda Mission, or through employer-sponsored community programs like FXServes.

  • Use your workplace as a starting point to find co-workers with shared interests, discover local organizations, and explore the city together.

Starting your career in a new city involves more than just finding an apartment and figuring out your commute. You also want people to spend time with, places you look forward to visiting, and activities that eventually make your new city feel more like home.

If you’re wondering how to get involved in Harrisburg, PA, you have plenty of places to start. From young professional groups and recreational sports to volunteering, hobbies, and local events, there are plenty of ways to start building your community in Harrisburg.

In this guide, we’ll explore six practical ways to get involved in Harrisburg, meet new people, and start building a community, with advice from young professionals who’ve done it themselves.

5 ways to get involved in Harrisburg as a young professional

Getting involved does not have to mean walking into a formal networking event with a stack of business cards. Some of the easiest ways to build connections come from repeatedly showing up somewhere you already want to be.

Pick one or two options that match your interests and start there. Here are six ways to turn Harrisburg from the place where you live or work into a community you participate in.

  1. Join Harrisburg Young Professionals (HYP)
  2. Find a group based on your interests
  3. Volunteer in the Harrisburg community
  4. Explore Harrisburg events throughout the year
  5. Find your community with other FXers

1. Join Harrisburg Young Professionals (HYP)

If you want professional development, new friends, community involvement, and social activities in one place, Harrisburg Young Professionals (HYP) is a great place to start. HYP is a local organization that connects young professionals through opportunities to build their careers, meet people, and get more involved in the Harrisburg community.

HYP currently has more than 655 active members, and you can choose how you want to participate based on your interests and goals.

If you’re interested in working at WebFX and joining HYP, WebFX can help you get started. We offer a membership reimbursement program to support eligible FXers who want to get involved, making it easier to take advantage of HYP’s networking, professional development, and community opportunities.

Networking and social events

If you’re researching Harrisburg networking groups because you want to expand your professional circle, HYP gives you several ways to make those connections in more relaxed settings.

Its calendar includes networking opportunities and social gatherings such as New Member Socials and First Friday events, where you can meet other young professionals while getting more familiar with Harrisburg.

These events can be an easy first step if you’re new to the area. Start with one event, introduce yourself to a few people, and use HYP’s other activities to keep building those connections.

HYP sports and fitness

HYP sports combine recurring activity with a built-in social community. More than 4,700 players have participated in HYP sports programs, with options including:

  • Basketball
  • Dodgeball
  • Kickball
  • Mini golf
  • Flag football
  • A running club
  • Indoor and sand volleyball
  • Bowling

“I’ve played all the HYP sports. Volleyball, kickball, flag football, basketball, dodgeball, bowling, and even mini golf! I wanted to join because I love sports. I was a high school and college athlete and wanted to continue to compete competitively, meet new people, and have fun.

HYP opened up a new community in the area. I’ve met and gotten to know a lot of people through HYP by being involved in the sports community. I hang out with a lot of them now off the field as well. Each week, we show up, play, compete, and socialize during and after, which has allowed me to make new friendships as I moved back to the Harrisburg area years ago. Now it’s my favorite part of the week. I enjoy the outlet it gives me and the time with friends.”

“My volleyball team has been together for about 8 years, and we’ve made amazing friends through HYP sports. Many teams, mine included, get together outside of league games for dinners, drinks, and board game nights.

After seasons of play, you get to know your opponents as well as your teammates. We recognize every team in our bracket and have friends scattered throughout the league. Playing HYP led me to join the greater volleyball community in Harrisburg, where I take part in tournaments, open gyms, and pickup play. It has widened my circle well beyond my own team.”

Its sports programs welcome different skill levels, so you do not have to arrive ready for serious competition.

The HYP Running Club, for example, welcomes everyone from people training for their first 5K to experienced marathoners. The group meets for recurring runs, jogs, and walks, and participates in local races when possible.

“You don’t have to know anyone to join a team! You can always sign up to be a free agent. You’ll get assigned to a team and can meet people that way. A lot of times, people will go out afterward, and that’s also a great way to mingle with other teams and people in the community.”

If sports sound like your best fit, choose something you would still enjoy even if you walked in knowing nobody. The recurring schedule will give you more opportunities to turn introductions into familiar faces.

“I’d recommend volleyball as your first HYP sport! It’s HYP’s largest sport, so there’s a big community, and with three divisions (Casual, Intermediate, and Elite), you won’t feel out of place even if you’ve never played and just want to meet people. If volleyball isn’t for you, HYP offers plenty of other sports.”

Community service

HYP also gives members opportunities to contribute to the city while meeting people who care about similar causes. Its community involvement includes nonprofit partnerships, volunteer outings, and city improvement activities such as the Forster Street Cleanup.

Volunteering can be a particularly natural way to meet people when you’re new to Harrisburg because you’re working alongside others toward a shared goal. It also gives you an opportunity to learn about the organizations, neighborhoods, and needs that make up your new community.

Home in the City

If you’re considering putting down longer-term roots, HYP’s Home in the City program offers another kind of support. The program provides $1,000 grants to eligible HYP members purchasing a home within the City of Harrisburg.

That makes HYP useful beyond finding things to do in Harrisburg for young professionals. Its programs can support different stages of becoming part of the city, from meeting people and building your career to eventually making Harrisburg your long-term home.

Professional development

HYP can also help you build your professional community. Its programming includes workshops, speaker events, networking opportunities, and groups such as HYP Toastmasters, giving members ways to develop skills while connecting with other professionals in the area.

That makes HYP a useful starting point if your search for Harrisburg young professional groups is driven by both social and career goals. You can choose opportunities that match what you want to develop, then deepen your involvement through committees or leadership roles.

Many FXers have taken that path. Jessica, an FXer who was named HYP’s Member of the Year in 2026, has spent many years getting involved with the organization and its events.

“I learned about Harrisburg Young Professionals back when I started working at WebFX in 2019. After attending a new member social and meeting some of HYP’s leaders, I decided to attend a marketing committee meeting. That eventually led to me serving as marketing committee co-chair, and later as a photographer and videographer for their events. I’ve been behind the camera capturing a variety of HYP events for several years now, and I’ve met so many awesome people through the organization. I love getting to use my skills to show off all that Harrisburg has to offer.

HYP has really opened my eyes to all of the fun, unique things Harrisburg has to offer. By attending the events hosted around Harrisburg, I’ve gotten to experience new restaurants, event spaces, museums, parks, shops, and so much more. There are so many hidden gems throughout the city, and I love photographing them all and spreading the word so others can experience them, too.”

If HYP sounds like your kind of community, start small. Look at its upcoming calendar and choose one event, sport, volunteer opportunity, or professional activity that matches something you already enjoy.

“Look at the HYP event calendar and make a plan to attend an event that interests you. Whether you want to join a committee, attend a social, or get involved in sports, the first step is to show up. Everyone I’ve met through HYP is so welcoming and would love to show you the ropes.”

2. Find a group based on your interests

If you’re wondering how to meet people in Harrisburg, PA, start with something you already enjoy doing. Sports leagues, running groups, arts and theater communities, book clubs, and other interest-based groups give you a shared activity to build conversations around and a reason to see the same people again.

The best fit depends on what you’d genuinely want to keep doing. Instead of choosing an activity solely because it sounds like a good place to meet people, look for a community you’d be excited to return to.

Explore Harrisburg’s arts community

Harrisburg’s arts scene gives you several places to start. The city’s Arts District stretches through parts of downtown, Midtown, and the riverfront and includes galleries, theater, public art, museums, and entertainment venues.

“Throwing yourself into the art scene here is a fantastic way to meet new people. It’s easy to start conversations and form friendships in these communities because you have a common interest — art. Through poetry open mics and portrait painting, I’ve been recruited for a lot of different events. For example, I was asked to read poetry in front of an audience in the Capitol building, which I never thought I’d get to do.”

If you’re looking to get involved in the art scene, there are many opportunities to get you started.

“I’ve been involved in the arts since I was a young kid, and when I moved to Harrisburg about seven years ago, I sought out organizations where I could meet other artists. It started with poetry open mics and taking time on weekends to draw in public. Art can be a solitary thing, so it’s healthy to find spaces where you’re comfortable working on writing, drawing, painting, and other activities in a public space.

I’d recommend joining the Art Association of Harrisburg. They have a broad spectrum of classes you can take, whether you’re new to art, intermediate, or advanced. If you want to start a little smaller, grab a table at the Midtown Scholar and sketch for a few hours while listening to music. If you’re a writer, try one of the open mics at the Midtown Cinema or the recently opened 717 Arts community center.”

Get involved in local theater

Theater can provide another recurring community for people who enjoy performing, production, or simply seeing local shows.

“There is an abundance of theater opportunities here! The talent in this area is incredible, a real treasure trove, but what’s made the biggest impact on me is the people behind it. So many of them are some of the kindest, most supportive humans I’ve had the pleasure of knowing.”

Recurring theater activities give you more opportunities to see the same people, continue conversations, and gradually become part of the community.

Expert insights from webfx logo

Madison E., Earned Media Team Coach

“If you’re interested in performing, I’d start by checking out local theatres’ websites and social media pages for upcoming auditions.

Theatre Harrisburg is an incredible place to start. The quality of their performances is seriously impressive. I also love Gamut Theatre and Open Stage. They have such a talented community of performers of the highest caliber, and offer a wide variety of shows and events.

If auditioning feels like a big leap, start by seeing a show! It’s a great way to get a feel for each theater and discover what interests you. And if you’re looking for something a little more low-stakes, there are also endless local open mic and karaoke nights.”

Whether your interest is art, theater, books, running, or something else, look for a group or activity you’d genuinely enjoy returning to.

3. Volunteer in the Harrisburg community

Volunteering gives you a chance to learn more about the Harrisburg community while spending time with people who care about similar causes. If you’re searching for volunteer opportunities in Harrisburg, PA, start by identifying a cause you’d genuinely like to support and a commitment that fits your schedule.

Your workplace may also introduce you to local organizations. Through FXServes, FXers can participate in volunteer opportunities near WebFX hubs, giving team members a way to serve alongside their co-workers while learning about organizations and needs in the surrounding community.

In Central Pennsylvania, WebFX has gotten involved in the community by volunteering with the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and Bethesda Mission, Midtown Harrisburg litter cleanups, and Red Cross blood drives.

FXServes Food Bank team

That can be especially useful when you’re new to Harrisburg. You can start alongside people you already know from work, learn more about a local organization, and discover additional ways to contribute over time.

Try choosing one cause and one opportunity instead of searching every volunteer listing at once. A recurring commitment gives you more opportunities to build relationships with both the organization and the people serving alongside you.

4. Explore Harrisburg events throughout the year

If you’re looking for things to do in Harrisburg for young professionals, the city’s recurring events give you plenty of lower-commitment ways to explore the area. Pick a few events that match your interests, invite someone you’ve recently met, and use them as opportunities to experience more of Harrisburg throughout the year.

Winter

Start the year with one of Harrisburg’s biggest local traditions, the Pennsylvania Farm Show. The annual event gives you an opportunity to experience Pennsylvania agriculture, food, competitions, exhibits, and other activities with friends or co-workers.

Later in the season, the Ice & Fire Festival brings ice sculptures, live entertainment, food, local vendors, and other activities to downtown Harrisburg.

Spring

Over Memorial Day weekend, Artsfest fills Riverfront Park with artists, live entertainment, community art, and food. The 2026 festival featured more than 170 juried artisans and craftspeople, making it a natural event to explore if you’re interested in the arts community discussed earlier.

Spring is also a good time to check Harrisburg’s events calendar for outdoor activities and other opportunities to spend more time around the city as the weather warms up.

Summer

Summer gives you several reasons to head toward the riverfront. The July 4th Food Truck Festival combines food and live entertainment along Riverfront Park, while the Riverfront Park concert series gives you another option for live music.

If you prefer something active, try the Harrisburg Mile. The annual race gives individual runners and workplace teams another way to participate in the local community, and FXers have previously taken part as part of WebFX’s company activities.

“What I love most about the Harrisburg Mile is the incredible camaraderie! Even though I’m not a runner, I find myself signing up year after year because being part of our corporate team, cheering on my co-workers, and supporting a great cause is such a rewarding experience. Co-workers always linger at the finish line to loudly and proudly cheer on those still finishing. I love heading to the post-race beer garden with the team to swap race stories, celebrate personal milestones, and unwind together after taking on a challenge!”

Summer is also a great time to look for HYP sports, social events, and other outdoor activities happening around Harrisburg.

Fall

Around Labor Day weekend, Kipona brings art, live music, food, and multicultural programming to the riverfront. It’s another long-standing Harrisburg tradition and an easy event to attend with a new friend, co-worker, or someone you’ve met through another local group.

Later in the year, you can also look ahead to seasonal city events such as the Winter Holiday Parade and New Year’s Eve Celebration.

You don’t need to fill every weekend to feel connected to Harrisburg. Choose a few events that make you want to return next year, then use them as opportunities to invite the people you’re meeting through work, HYP, volunteering, or your other interests.

5. Find your community with other FXers

When I first moved to Harrisburg and started working at WebFX, I didn’t know anyone in the area. I was living on my own, starting my career, and looking for ways to meet people and build friendships. Thankfully, I discovered that WebFX had communities and activities designed to help FXers connect beyond their immediate teams, which gave me a starting point for building my own connections in Harrisburg.

If you’re considering Harrisburg, PA jobs while figuring out what life in the area could look like, your workplace can become another starting point for meeting people. At WebFX, that community extends beyond your immediate team through shared interests, volunteer opportunities, company activities, and experiences around Harrisburg.

Connect through FXCommunities

FXCommunities help FXers connect through existing hobbies, explore new interests together, and build friendships outside their day-to-day roles.

Happy Hour Heroes gathering

Current communities include FXFoodies, Book Club, ArtFX, Happy Hour Heroes, and CraftersFX. Depending on your interests, you might find people to try a restaurant downtown with, discuss your latest read, work on a craft, or explore Harrisburg’s arts scene.

WebFX also helps support these communities by contributing $10 per FXer who attends an FXCommunity event. These contributions help community leaders organize activities and create more opportunities for FXers to connect over shared interests.

When I first learned about FXCommunities, I was excited to get involved. I’d participated in several clubs in high school and missed connecting with people over shared interests, so I started attending FXCommunity events during my first few months at WebFX.

Everyone was welcoming, and before long, I was getting to know FXers outside my immediate team. It felt good to walk around the office and recognize more familiar faces, and those early connections gave me the confidence to attend other company events on my own and strike up conversations with new people.

I enjoyed the experience so much that when I was approached about co-leading FXFoodies, I was thrilled. I wanted to help other FXers experience the same sense of connection I’d found when I first joined.

One of my favorite parts of co-leading FXFoodies has been seeing how a shared interest can lead to unexpected friendships. I’ve watched FXers from different departments connect over foods they’ve tried and discover other things they have in common.

I’ve experienced that firsthand, too. Through co-leading FXFoodies, I got to know another FXer from our Earned Media department who shares my love of trying new foods. We eventually discovered that we also enjoy reading similar books!

“Don’t be afraid to sign up for an event if it seems interesting! If you’re worried about going on your own, invite someone from your team to join you, and whether they can come or not, know you’ll be happily welcomed either way. It brings me so much joy to see new faces at the events I help coordinate, as I love getting to know people and discovering what things we have in common. Beyond that, I love connecting others, and by simply showing up, you’re taking the first step toward making that happen!”

Give back together through FXServes

FXServes gives FXers another way to connect while contributing to the communities around our hubs. In Central Pennsylvania, WebFX has gotten involved through volunteering with the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and Bethesda Mission, Midtown Harrisburg litter cleanups, Red Cross blood drives, and other service activities.

FXServes litter cleanup

For someone who’s new to Harrisburg, these activities can introduce you to local organizations while giving you an opportunity to volunteer alongside people you already know from work.

Meet FXers through company activities

There are also opportunities to connect outside your everyday responsibilities through Game Nights, company events, and participation in local activities.

These experiences can make it easier to turn a workplace introduction into a friendship. Someone you meet through your team, an FXCommunity, or a company activity may eventually become the person you join for Artsfest, play HYP sports with, or invite to try a new restaurant.

Start building connections from day one

When you’re first starting your career at WebFX, view it as an opportunity to grow professionally and personally. Consider the community you want to be part of and develop a plan to get involved.

WebFX Bootcamp covers the professional side of things, providing new FXers with structured training, hands-on practice, feedback, mentorship, and opportunities to learn alongside their teams during their first 120 days.

Outside of your training, seek ways to connect with the people you work with by learning what interests them. You might surprise yourself and find common interests that may lead to new experiences and friendships.

Those early interactions give you time to get to know the people you’re working with while settling into your new role and, if you’ve relocated, your new city.

If you’re exploring Harrisburg, PA marketing jobs or careers, consider the community surrounding the role alongside the responsibilities themselves. Your workplace doesn’t have to be your entire social circle, but it can introduce you to people who help you start exploring everything else Harrisburg has to offer.

“What I didn’t expect was to find another equally important community at work. At WebFX, I’ve found people who support me not just professionally, but as a person with passions outside of my career. My co-workers have come to several of my shows, and seeing them in the audience is the best feeling. There’s something really special about having those two parts of my life come together.

Having the work-life balance to grow in my career while still making time to perform is something I don’t take for granted. I get to do work I’m proud of at a place I love, fill my creative cup, and build meaningful friendships along the way. That’s made Harrisburg feel like home.”

How to start building your Harrisburg community

Knowing how to get involved in Harrisburg, PA, gets much easier when you stop trying to do everything at once. Your goal is to find a few places where you have a reason to keep showing up.

Try this four-step approach:

  1. Choose one interest you already enjoy. Pick a sport, hobby, cause, professional interest, or activity you would want to do regardless of who else attends.
  2. Find something recurring. Join a league, committee, volunteer program, club, workplace community, or event series instead of relying only on one-time events.
  3. Show up more than once. Familiarity takes time. Returning gives you another opportunity to recognize someone, continue a conversation, or become part of the group’s routine.
  4. Take one more step. Join the committee, sign up for another season, volunteer for an event, or invite someone you met to try another Harrisburg activity with you.

If you’re still deciding whether to move to Harrisburg for a job, you can use the same thinking when evaluating employers. Look beyond the role and consider the training, communities, activities, and opportunities you’ll have to meet people after you start.

That can matter even more when you’re beginning your first full-time job after college. Our post-grad career guide covers more of the career side of that transition, from starting your job search to evaluating your options.
