What is SEO visibility?
SEO visibility (also known as search visibility) measures a site’s visibility across search experiences, including Google, Bing, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and more.
Visibility — it’s what every company is looking to earn online, whether as a mention in a ChatGPT response, a citation in a Google AI Overview, or a link in Bing search results.
Discover the basics of search visibility (and how to improve it) now:
What is SEO visibility?
SEO visibility — also referred to as search visibility or search engine visibility — is a measure of how likely users are to see your website in Google search results. Some marketers measure it by how many clicks you earn. Usually, though, it’s about how many people see your site, not how many of them click on it.
What determines your search visibility?
Search visibility depends on several factors, including:
| Factor | Details |
| Search experience | Google, ChatGPT, Meta, and other platforms use different factors to generate search or query responses. |
| Site accessibility | Appearing across search experiences means making your website accessible to search and LLM crawlers. |
| Brand reputation | Mentions (an AI search metric) are often influenced by a brand’s reputation, which surfaces through reviews, online discussions, and business accolades, like awards and certifications. |
| Brand positioning | A brand’s position, whether as the affordable option or premium solution, shapes its visibility in personalized searches, such as in ChatGPT conversations. |
| AI search and SEO optimizations | On- and off-site optimizations, like improving a page’s structure and clarity, also influence a website’s AI search visibility. |
Which metrics measure SEO visibility?
Metrics for measuring SEO visibility include:
| Metric | Definition | Tracking tools |
| Impression | Measures when a URL is visible to a user in search results |
|
| Click | Measures when a user clicks on a URL |
|
| Average position | Measures the average position of a URL for queries |
|
| Citation | Measures when an LLM (like ChatGPT) cites a brand by linking to its website |
|
| Mention | Measures when an LLM (like ChatGPT) mentions a brand without linking to the brand’s website |
|
Which dimensions measure search visibility?
Dimensions for measuring search visibility include:
| Dimension | Definition | Tracking tools |
| Brand sentiment | Measures user sentiment towards a brand and/or product as positive, negative, or neutral | |
| Brand attributes | Measures leading and lagging brand attributes, like around cost, innovation, or approach |
How do I improve my SEO visibility?
Naturally, you want your SEO visibility to be as high as possible. So, what can you do to increase it?
As we just established, there are a ton of factors that contribute to your visibility. But if you’re looking to make some large strides toward improving your visibility, we have a few tips you should definitely follow. Those tips include:
Keep reading to find out more about each.
1. Target long-tail keywords
If you’re at all familiar with SEO, you know that one of the most fundamental steps involved in it is keyword research and integration. By targeting specific keywords on your website, you can signal to Google that you should rank for those terms.
But it’s important to target the right keywords. More specifically, you should try to target long-tail keywords, which are those that are several words long. Why target these keywords? Because they’re more specific, which means they reach a more precise audience and come with less competition in search results.
For example, compare the search results for the short-tail keyword “accounting”…

… with the results for the long-tail keyword “accounting services in ann arbor michigan.”

As you can see, the keyword “accounting” is way too vague, and the top search results are all informational. But the second keyword is way more specific, so we see that some accounting firms made it into the top few results.
Since long-tail keywords are more specific, that means it’s a lot easier to rank high for those keywords, increasing your search visibility.
2. Use responsive design
When Google ranks pages, it uses something called mobile-first indexing. That means it ranks pages based on their mobile versions — even in searches made on a desktop computer. So, if you want your site to have any chance at ranking in search results, you need your site to be mobile-friendly.
One of the easiest ways to do this is to use responsive design. That’s a type of web design where the elements on your page will rearrange themselves to fit the screen where they appear. So, a desktop version of a website will look slightly different from a mobile version.

Having a mobile-friendly site will help you rank higher, increasing your search visibility. Plus, it’ll lead to more clicks.
3. Optimize your page speeds
Another vital contributor to your rankings is your page speeds. If your site takes forever to load, no one will want to visit it. As a result, Google will rank it a lot lower. In fact, Core Web Vitals — a collection of metrics related to page load times — are one of the most important ranking factors.
So, how can you help your pages load faster? There are a few different things you can do, including:
- Compressing images
- Caching web pages
- Minifying code
- Limiting redirects
Each of these things will speed up your pages and boost your rankings, leading to an increase in search engine visibility.
4. Earn reputable backlinks
Finally, you should be sure to earn backlinks to your web content. If you don’t know what those are, they’re links that lead from other websites to your content. Importantly, though, don’t just earn backlinks from any website. You want to earn them from reputable sites in your industry.
Why earn backlinks? Because Google loves them! When a reputable site links to you, Google assumes that your site is reputable as well, so it ranks it higher. That gives you a ton more search visibility.
So, how do you earn backlinks? Well, the simplest way to do it directly is to visit reputable sites in your industry and look for broken or missing links. When you find some, contact the site owners and recommend that they replace them with fresh links to relevant pages on your site.
