What does the Yelp ChatGPT partnership mean for local businesses?
Yelp has licensed its reviews, ratings, photos, and business details to OpenAI, so your Yelp profile will feed ChatGPT’s local recommendations. The partnership includes branded links, an upcoming Request a Quote integration for lead generation inside chat conversations, and non-exclusive terms that could extend the same data to other AI platforms. -
How does ChatGPT decide which local businesses to recommend?
OpenAI has not published how it ranks local businesses. What you can control is the quality of the data it draws on: review volume and recency, accurate operating details like hours and service categories, and whether your reviews appear on your public profile rather than sitting in Yelp’s “not recommended” section. -
Is Yelp data showing up in ChatGPT answers yet?
A 10-query spot check in San Francisco on August 4, 2026 found no visible Yelp citations, while Angi, Thumbtack, and Tripadvisor did appear as sources. That is a limited test, not proof of absence, but it suggests a preparation window before Yelp attribution becomes visible. -
Where do ChatGPT leads show up in your analytics?
Website clicks from ChatGPT typically carry utm_source=chatgpt.com and appear in Google Analytics, though mobile app clicks often land as direct traffic. A quote request completed inside the chat may never create a session at all, so without call tracking and an intake form source field, those leads can read as zero. -
How can you get credit for AI-generated leads?
Implement dedicated call tracking numbers for your Yelp profile, add an AI assistant option to your intake form’s “how did you hear about us” field, test ChatGPT answers monthly with customer-phrased questions, and compare cost per booked job across Yelp, Local Services Ads, and Google Ads to properly measure channel performance.
The Yelp ChatGPT deal, in short:
- What changed: Yelp licensed its reviews, ratings, photos, and business details to OpenAI, an agreement it disclosed in February 2026 and Axios detailed on July 23. ChatGPT has access to live Yelp data for local recommendations.
- What it means for your leads: Your Yelp review profile will help decide whether an AI names your business, and a coming Request a Quote integration will let people contact you without visiting your site.
- What most businesses missed: Reviews Yelp files under “not recommended” don’t count toward your public star rating or review count, and neither Yelp nor OpenAI has said whether they enter the licensed feed at all.
- What isn’t live yet: Request a Quote has been announced, not shipped. The licensing deal is also non-exclusive, so the same data could reach other AI platforms.
- What to do now: Count your not-recommended reviews, then add an AI assistant option to your intake form so you can tell when this channel starts producing leads.
Yelp has licensed its reviews, ratings, photos, and business details to OpenAI, and ChatGPT can pull them straight into its answers. Yelp disclosed the agreement in its February 2026 earnings release, and Axios reported the partnership details on July 23.
This Yelp ChatGPT partnership will also soon add a Request a Quote integration, which will let people contact providers inside the conversation. So, if someone in your service area asks ChatGPT for a recommendation, your Yelp reviews are now part of what it can draw on.
Most intake systems cannot see that lead arrive. That matters if you run a local service business that depends on Yelp for calls. Below, I break down how ChatGPT chooses which businesses to name, and how to get credit for the ones it sends you.

What does the Yelp ChatGPT partnership mean for local businesses?
For local businesses, the Yelp ChatGPT partnership means your Yelp profile will feed an AI recommendation engine you have never optimized for. Here are four parts of the deal that affect how you show up:
- Content licensing: Yelp supplies reviews, ratings, photos, and business information to OpenAI for use inside ChatGPT responses.
- Branded links: Yelp branding and links appear when OpenAI uses the content, though OpenAI controls how that experience looks and can change it without notice.
- Lead generation: The upcoming Yelp Request a Quote integration will allow ChatGPT users to contact local service providers without leaving the chat.
- Non-exclusive terms: The agreement does not prevent Yelp from licensing the same data to other AI companies.
Yelp already supplies business data to Apple Maps and Yahoo+, so the same review set could reach Perplexity or Gemini next. That means the work you do on your Yelp profile can now pay off across more than one platform.
None of this arrives as a surprise if you have been following AI optimization questions this year. AI tools already pulled recommendations from review platforms including Yelp and Google Business Profile. The Yelp OpenAI deal formalizes a pipeline that had been running informally and swaps stale training data for live data.
How does ChatGPT decide which local businesses to recommend?
ChatGPT recommends local businesses by drawing on licensed data sources, and Yelp is now one of them. OpenAI has not published how it ranks those businesses. If you want to know how to get recommended by ChatGPT in your service area, what you can control is the quality of the data it draws on:
- Review volume and recency on the licensed source: A profile carrying 40 reviews from the past year gives the model more to work with than one with four reviews from 2022.
- Accuracy of your operating details: Hours, service categories, and coverage area travel with the licensed feed. Wrong hours inside an AI answer cost you the job before the customer ever calls, and they never see a second opinion to correct it.
- Whether your reviews appear on your profile at all: Most owners have never checked this, and it shapes both of the numbers above. More on that below.
The timing argument here rests on buyer behavior. BrightLocal’s 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found that 45% of consumers used AI tools to find local businesses in the past year, up from 6% the year before. That jump makes AI the third most-used local discovery channel, behind Google and Facebook.
Is Yelp data showing up in ChatGPT answers yet?
Yelp data does not appear as a visible source in ChatGPT’s local answers yet, at least not in the queries I tested. On August 4, 2026, I ran 10 local queries using logged-out temporary chats, five for restaurants and five for home services, all in San Francisco. Yelp appeared in none of them.
| # | Query | Yelp cited? | Sources cited |
| 1 | Dinner under $40 | No | Eater SF, The Infatuation |
| 2 | Quiet brunch | No | Reddit, Eater SF, Condé Nast Traveler, OpenTable |
| 3 | Vegan with patio | No | The Infatuation, OpenTable, Reddit |
| 4 | Best tacos | No | Eater SF, SF Standard, Tripadvisor, Michelin, Time Out |
| 5 | Birthday dinner for eight | No | Restaurant websites only |
| 6 | Water heater repair | No | Thumbtack, Angi, BBB, SF Chronicle, contractor sites |
| 7 | Emergency plumber | No | Contractor websites only, 12 of 12 |
| 8 | HVAC replacement | No | Angi, Expertise, ConsumerAffairs, Reddit |
| 9 | Roof leak | No | None displayed |
| 10 | Licensed electrician | No | Expertise, ConsumerAffairs, Reddit |
Angi showed up in two queries. Thumbtack, BBB, and Tripadvisor each appeared once. Yelp appeared zero times.

What this test can and cannot tell you:
- Ten queries in one metro on one day is a spot check, not a study.
- A logged-out session runs ChatGPT’s basic model, which may behave differently from a paid account.
- ChatGPT is non-deterministic, so a rerun can surface different businesses.
- OpenAI controls how Yelp content is presented, so the absence of visible Yelp branding does not prove the absence of Yelp data.
The reasonable read: The licensing is signed, and the visible surface has not arrived. That gives you a preparation window, which is the opposite of the urgency most coverage implies.
What happens to the reviews Yelp hides from your profile?
Reviews that Yelp files under “not recommended” sit behind a separate link, and Yelp confirms they don’t factor into your public star rating or review count. Those two numbers are the most likely things a recommendation engine reads, which makes your not-recommended count worth knowing.
Neither Yelp nor OpenAI has disclosed whether filtered reviews enter the licensed feed. What’s documented is what they don’t affect on Yelp itself.
A small business owner posting in r/Yelp reported that seven of eight reviews were hidden within 24 hours of posting, while all 31 of the same business’s Google reviews stayed live. The thread it came from was mostly positive about the partnership, which makes the underlying review-visibility problem easier to miss.
Treat that as a hypothesis rather than a finding. It describes one account, and Yelp’s filter behaves differently across categories and review histories. The useful move takes two minutes: Open your own not-recommended page and count what sits behind it.
Spending more with Yelp will not solve it either. Yelp states that advertising has no connection to how its recommendation software treats a business’s reviews, and that advertisers and non-advertisers are treated exactly the same. A commenter in that same thread pointed to a paying advertiser carrying 16 reviews in the not-recommended section. Ads buy placement in search results, not review visibility.
So your visible review set carries your public rating, and ad spend does not affect which reviews land there.
Where do ChatGPT leads show up in your analytics?
It depends on what the customer does next. A website click from ChatGPT usually carries utm_source=chatgpt.com, which OpenAI appends automatically, so that the visit shows up in Google Analytics 4 (GA4) as a recognizable source. Mobile app clicks and some free-tier sessions strip the referrer, so those land as direct traffic instead.
The third case is the one to plan for. A quote request completed inside the chat may never create a session at all, and neither Yelp nor OpenAI has disclosed what attribution data that request will pass to the business. That is where the channel books jobs, your report shows nothing, and the Yelp line item gets cut at renewal for underperforming.
This is a solved problem. Call tracking and a source field on your intake form both existed long before ChatGPT, and CallTrackerFX inside RevenueCloudFX handles the call side by assigning campaign-specific numbers. What’s new is that almost nobody has pointed either one at an AI assistant yet. Set the tracking up now, while the channel is still small, so you can size it honestly in six months instead of cutting a line item that was working.

The ChatGPT Lead Trace: Four steps to get found and get credit
Getting recommended by ChatGPT and getting credit for it take different work. This four-step process covers both, and you can finish the first two this week.
The four steps at a glance:
Step 1: Audit your Yelp profile and your not-recommended count
Start with eligibility. Enable Yelp Request a Quote if it’s available for your business, though note that Yelp has not disclosed how providers will qualify for the ChatGPT integration.
Check your operating details against reality next: Hours, service categories, and the area you actually cover. Then count your not-recommended reviews and write that number down as the baseline you will track. Yelp reports that about three-quarters of all reviews across the platform are recommended, so that gives you something to judge yours against.
Multi-location businesses face a more challenging version of this problem, since details drift from location to location. Tools like LocalFX sync listing data across 100 directories, including Google Business Profile and Yelp, so a single update reaches every profile.
Step 2: Test the answer with the questions your customers ask
Write out 10 questions a real customer would type, phrased the way they would phrase them. “Who repairs water heaters in Tucson this week” beats “best plumber Tucson,” because people talk to a chatbot differently than they type into a search box.
Run each question and log two things: Whether ChatGPT names your business, and whether the details it reports hold up. Repeat monthly using the same 10 questions so you can see movement rather than guessing at it.
Step 3: Trace the lead before the channel produces one
Assign a dedicated call tracking number to your Yelp profile so calls originating there separate cleanly from everything else.
Add an AI assistant option to the “how did you hear about us” field on your intake form. Almost no intake forms carry one, which explains why this channel reads as zero for most businesses.
Visibility and attribution solve separately. Our work on improving visibility in AI results produced a 136% increase in AI search visibility for one client, and that lift only becomes a budget argument when the leads arrive with a traceable source.
Step 4: Price the channel against LSAs and Google Ads
Compare cost per booked job across Yelp, Local Services Ads, and Google Ads once you can count all three. You need a benchmark for that comparison. Our 2026 study of home services search found Local Services Ads held position one in all 142 searches where they appeared, which tells you exactly what you give up by shifting budget away from them.
Set expectations before you start. Attribution improvements show up inside one billing cycle. Visibility in AI answers shifts over time, and how quickly depends on your review base and how crowded your category is locally. OmniSEO® is how you watch that movement without rerunning queries by hand every month.

Should you reactivate a Yelp profile you gave up on?
Reactivate if you sell a service people request quotes for and your visible review base holds up. Skip it if your not-recommended count runs high and your Google Business Profile already carries your local demand. Fix the review base first.
The reason to reconsider Yelp is the licensing deal itself. Your Yelp profile will feed a surface it never reached before, so whatever you build there works twice, once for people browsing Yelp directly and once for the licensed feed inside ChatGPT.
Request a Quote is the other reason to look again. Once it lands in ChatGPT, someone can go from asking a question to contacting you without ever visiting a website, which is a shorter path than any channel you currently run. Whether your business is eligible depends on your category and whether you have the feature enabled, per Yelp’s documentation.
One clarification on the paid side: ChatGPT advertising places sponsored units inside conversations and runs independently of the licensed review feed. Neither Yelp advertising nor ChatGPT advertising buys you a place in Yelp-sourced recommendations, so treat them as two budget lines doing two different jobs.
If you decide to reactivate, do it with the right setup in place. WebFX’s Yelp ad management services pair call tracking with revenue reporting, so you can tie your Yelp calls and quote requests to actual booked revenue instead of platform-reported leads. Contact us online or call 888-601-5359 to see what that setup looks like.
Yelp ChatGPT FAQs
Does ChatGPT use Yelp reviews now?
Yes. Yelp licensed its reviews, ratings, photos, and business details to OpenAI, an agreement it disclosed in February 2026, so ChatGPT can draw on them when answering local questions. Yelp branding and links appear when OpenAI uses the content.
How do you get recommended by ChatGPT as a local business?
Focus on the sources that ChatGPT licenses. Keep your Yelp and Google Business Profile details accurate, build recent review volume, and check your not-recommended count so your strongest reviews stay visible.
What is Yelp Request a Quote in ChatGPT?
The Yelp Request a Quote feature will let ChatGPT users contact local service providers for quotes directly in the conversation. Yelp and OpenAI have announced the feature, and it has not launched yet.
Is Yelp still relevant in 2026?
Yes, but that depends on your category more than on Yelp’s reputation. BrightLocal found Yelp ranks third for where consumers write reviews at 24%, behind Google at 45% and Facebook at 34%. Categories where Google Business Profile dominates will see less return.
Will a ChatGPT lead show up in Google Analytics?
Usually yes, if they click through to your site. OpenAI appends utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral URLs, so GA4 records the visit as chatgpt.com. Mobile app clicks often strip the referrer and land as direct, and a quote request completed inside the chat may never create a session at all.
