What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is currently a free AI-powered chatbot developed by OpenAI using natural language processing. ChatGPT enables you to interact with it using human-like conversation. It can answer your questions and write code and essays.
ChatGPT uses reinforcement learning with human feedback (RLHF) as another layer of training. RLHF provides human feedback to teach the chatbot to follow instructions and provide responses that are helpful to people.
How to use ChatGPT in digital marketing
Here are six best uses of ChatGPT in digital marketing:
- Content marketing
- Email marketing
- Initial consumer insights research
- Personalization
- Search engine optimization (SEO)
- Chatbots
Let’s go through each one of these bot marketing applications:
1. Content marketing
Writers and content marketers don’t need to worry about ChatGPT taking over their careers. Instead, they can use this chatbot as an assistant. Here’s how to use ChatGPT for content creation:
Generate topic ideas
If you need help developing new topics for content marketing, you can use ChatGPT for suggestions. You can ask broad topics or request topics specific to your audience by providing more details about your buyer personas.
Assist in developing a list of FAQs
Are you developing a frequently asked questions (FAQs) section for your website? Ask ChatGPT to suggest FAQ topics relevant to your business. Ask follow-up questions if you need to refine your list.
Research about a particular topic
ChatGPT can also aid with your research about a particular topic. For example, let’s say your pet store business has to create a blog post on a relevant topic you’re not very familiar with. You can ask ChatGPT to provide you with preliminary information.
ChatGPT doesn’t cite its sources unless you ask, and it warns you that it can generate incorrect information. Make sure you do further research about a topic to verify the details that ChatGPT provides you.
2. Email marketing
Have you ever deleted an email because the subject line seems irrelevant? You’re not alone —47% of email recipients open emails based only on the subject line.
Use ChatGPT for email subject line inspiration. If you need help with jumpstarting writing newsletter content, you can also use ChatGPT for copy. Make sure you review the AI’s output for:
- Accuracy
- Relevance with your audience
- Tone and brand voice
Editing ChatGPT’s suggestions is an excellent idea to make your copy fit your brand’s tone. For example, if your brand voice is friendly, consider using emojis in your subject line.
You can also leverage the use of ChatGPT by asking why it does certain things. For example, why does it use exclamation points? Why does it structure email content a certain way?

3. Initial consumer insights research
Do you need to get an overview about your customers and prospects? ChatGPT can collate data from the web about your prospects and customers based on published reports and articles.
It pulls data from different sources — from industry and published market research reports to news articles on which it was trained. As of this writing, the chatbot only includes sources from 2021 and older.
Make sure you specify the nature of your business and your location. Instruct ChatGPT to cite its sources, so you can check for accuracy.
You must also note that the insights that ChatGPT generates aren’t fresh. It can provide you a good backgrounder, but you must perform further market research using surveys or your martech stack.
4. Personalization
With 72% of consumers claiming that they only engage with personalized messages, it’s crucial to employ personalization tactics to stand out among your competitors.
Consider using ChatGPT to get help with creating messages for your different customer segments. Here are some tips:
- Set the context by mentioning your offerings and their unique selling propositions (USPs). Provide details like your products and USPs. If you sell chocolate chip muffins baked fresh daily and in small batches, add these details when you chat with the AI.
- Share details about your different customer segments. Briefly describe each customer segment. If ChatGPT didn’t return satisfactory copies, follow up with a few more info and some key points you want to see.
- Indicate your copy’s character limits, if any. Let ChatGPT know you’re working with a limited character count.
- Make sure you don’t share sensitive information. To improve its systems, ChatGPT has AI trainers that may review conversations. Make sure you don’t leave confidential or sensitive information!
- Consider training ChatGPT on your company’s writing style. There are several ways you can train ChatGPT, making it easier to generate content that works well for your business.
5. SEO
Like writers, SEO professionals can view ChatGPT as a tool instead of a threat. Here’s how to use ChatGPT for SEO:
Let’s go through each one:
Keyword research
SEO professionals can use ChatGPT for keyword research. You can also ask it for long-term keywords relevant to your business.
Word of caution: ChatGPT isn’t connected to the Internet, so it may not give you the latest keywords. According to OpenAI’s ChatGPT FAQ, it has “limited knowledge of world and events after 2021 and may also occasionally produce harmful instructions or biased content.”
Consider using our ChatGPT plugin, SEO Assistant, to boost the AI chatbot’s keyword research capabilities.
To ensure you’re using the most recent and relevant keywords, complement your keyword research with tools like KeywordsFX. KeywordsFX is a free keyword suggestion tool that gives you insights into the keywords that your target audience is searching for.

Understanding search intent
Search intent is the reason a user performs a search. The search engine results page (SERPs) can give you an idea of users’ search intent. You can use ChatGPT as a Jarvis-like assistant to help you identify and analyze search intent.
Take this conversation with the AI about the search intent of the long-tail keyword “vegan sausage made with whole food ingredients.” Most of the ranking pages on the SERPs are recipes for vegan sausages.
ChatGPT, however, added that it could also have transactional intent. It also added what other things the searcher could be looking for, so it can help you identify the next search intent. Next search intent is what a user searches for after they’ve found the answer to their first search query.
SEO title generation
Digital marketers can also use ChatGPT to suggest SEO titles based on the keywords and their intent.
Take these recommendations with a grain of salt, though. Chances are, your competitors are trying to rank for the same keywords, so that they may use the same SEO titles suggested by an AI. It’s good practice to edit and improve on ChatGPT’s suggestions.
SEO content outline
As ChatGPT’s popularity grows, more businesses will use this AI to create an entire blog post or SEO content. The consequences are two-fold:
- Your website’s content will likely resemble your competitor’s: You can avoid this by using ChatGPT as a content outline creator and adding sections that you deem important.
- An entire online content generated by ChatGPT lacks the latest information: ChatGPT is trained with information published from 2021 and older as of this writing. So, it may not generate content with the latest helpful information for your audience. If you wish to publish content written by ChatGPT, check it for accuracy and edit it.
Search engines like Google won’t automatically penalize you for using AI-generated content. In its guidance on AI-generated content published in February 2023, Google said that the appropriate use of AI or automation is not against its guidelines. By “appropriate,” it means the content must not aim to manipulate search rankings.
In the same document, however, Google underscored the importance of original and high-quality content showcasing expertise, experience, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness (E-E-A-T) to rank in SERPs.
An AI that rehashes published information can’t possibly create pieces that demonstrate expertise, right? Google Search has been spotting poorly quality content written by humans and AI for years, so its systems can determine helpful content.
6. Chatbots
You can integrate ChatGPT into your chatbot so that it can respond to inquiries naturally, thus improving customer experience. You’ll need an account with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, to get started.
Limitations of ChatGPT
ChatGPT is a tool that can perform various tasks and help with your digital marketing efforts. Like other AI tools, however, it has some pretty major limitations.
It is not connected to the Internet and cannot learn new things unless the information is part of its training data. If you need answers about topics that are relatively new (2022 and newer), ChatGPT may not generate correct solutions or not provide the latest information.
You may also find biased content from ChatGPT, because it might have been trained with biased data. OpenAI recommends users click the “Thumbs Down” button to provide feedback that the answer is incorrect or biased.
