Grok Gets Ads: Inside X’s Entrance Into AI Search Advertising

$250 million. $4 billion. $85 billion.

That’s how much companies like xAI, Google, and OpenAI are spending to train and operate AI models like Grok, Gemini, and ChatGPT — and it’s the reason Elon Musk is bringing ads to X’s AI chatbot, Grok.

“Our focus thus far has just been on making Grok the smartest, most accurate AI in the world and I think we’ve largely succeeded in that…So we’ll turn our attention to how do we pay for those expensive GPUs.”

Discover what X’s entrance into the AI search advertising market means for businesses, and whether your organization should start using Grok ads in its digital advertising strategy.

What’s happening with Grok ads?

Businesses will now have the option to appear in Grok responses via ads. The goal is for advertisers to appear at the right moment, when users are ready to take action.

Where ads will appear

Ads will appear as a part of Grok’s response vs. as a promotional banner. This approach differs from other AI platforms, like Perplexity’s sponsored questions or Microsoft Copilot’s ad blocks.

How ads will work

According to Musk, Grok will use vector similarity (a concept becoming popular in OmniSEO™) to deliver ads to the right user at the right time. As these ads spend time in the ad network, their user match rate will improve.

How much will ads cost

That’s the million-dollar question — or rather billion. AI search advertising is expected to become a $25 billion market by 2029 as more users adopt AI chatbots like Grok, ChatGPT, and Perplexity for search.

How much advertising on Grok will cost, whether based on cost-per-click (CPC), cost per mille (CPM), cost per acquisition (CPA), or another bidding model, is unknown.

With greater relevancy and more niche audiences, it’s possible advertisers will see lower costs from conversational advertising on Grok. For comparison, Microsoft Copilot advertisers have already tripled their return on ad spend.

Who will advertise

Businesses across industries, from ecommerce to home services, can advertise on Grok. While its typical user is a male between the ages of 25-34, Grok could help brands reach more niche audience groups with its advertising structure.

Should you advertise on Grok?

Advertisers across brands, from Lowe’s to Uber to Shark Ninja, are asking this same question (all tuned into Musk’s Spaces meeting where Grok advertising was announced).

There are a few pros and cons to advertising on Grok, including:

Pros Cons
Target ready-to-buy users Unknown costs and ROAS
Reach engaged users (the average session is 15+ minutes) Limited control in ad placement and context
Get the first-mover advantage Newer platform and advertising network

If you’re looking to get the competitive, first-mover advantage to AI search advertising, it’s worth considering the risk of a newer, untested advertising platform.

Start small, experiment, and see what happens because search advertising is changing.

It’s not just Grok. The bigger picture of advertising in AI search

Advertising in AI experiences isn’t unique to Grok. Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity have also introduced paid ads (though these are limited to select advertisers), with ChatGPT ads rumored to arrive in 2026.

The results from these conversational advertising experiments look promising, though. According to Microsoft, its Copilot search ads are 25% more effective than traditional search ads.

Not to mention, more than 40% of users had a positive experience with these ads, signaling it’s possible for brands to create compelling offers that AI platforms can deliver at the right time.

What we’re seeing is an opportunity for advertisers to connect with users in a more relevant (and more cost-effective) way on the platforms they’re now using to solve problems, research products, and make purchases.

That’s a tremendous advantage for early adopters, and one worth taking.
