How Much Does it Cost to Advertise on Twitter?
Twitter is a social media platform that allows users to post short, 280-character updates. These updates, called Tweets, can also include photos, videos, links, and hashtags. It has 330 million active registered users, plus more than 500 million unregistered visitors to the site each month.
This means that as a marketer, it's safe to assume that at least part of your target audience is spending time on the platform. And with its advanced targeting options for advertisers, it's entirely possible to reach them. But if you're considering advertising on Twitter, you probably have the same question as most others in the same position: How much does it cost?

What's your cost to advertise on Twitter?
First, the good news: The cost to advertise on Twitter can be $0.
The site is completely free to use, so if you haven't yet made an account for your business, we recommend that you do. Then, you can use the site to:
- Tell your viewers when you have a new blog post available
- Update followers about sales you're having
- Direct viewers to specific pages on your site
- Show users pictures of videos of your business or products
- Hold Twitter chats to discuss popular topics in your industry
- Post updates about closings or changes to your schedule
- Join groups designed to promote companies in your area
- Engage with current and potential customers
- Promote specials and new offerings
- Run contests to grow brand awareness
Now, for the bad news: It takes an enormous amount of time and energy to successfully manage an active Twitter account.
Yes, some larger, well-known companies have launched their own Twitter campaigns and garnered huge amounts of followers with minimal effort. But with so many users on Twitter, it's easy to get lost in the crowd. There are many accounts, so it can be a challenge to get people to follow yours.
Twitter users also tend to use the platform from their mobile devices and to check and update accounts often, so new content is always being added. If you want to appear in their timelines, you need to post new content on a regular basis.
Twitter ad options
If you don't want to make Twitter a major part of your marketing strategy, using it as a free platform is a good option. However, if you're serious about growing your following and attracting new customers with the site, its paid options can be extremely beneficial.
Twitter has three main options for advertising:
1. Promoted tweets
Promoted tweets are based on an auction system and allow you to get your tweets in front of more users, whether they follow you or not. These tweets show up in user's timelines and are clearly labeled as "promoted."
Promoted tweets operate on a bidding system, and are charged based on the engagements they generate, like clicks, replies, retweets, and favorites. The cost about $.50 - $2 per engagement, and the average is $1.35.
2. Promoted accounts
In addition to promoting individual tweets, you can also promote your account as a whole. This will help you gain more followers and grow your brand awareness.
Like promoted tweets, pricing is decided by a bidding system. But instead of bidding on engagements, you determine your bid based on how much you're willing to pay for each new follower. Depending on your targeting, this will cost about $2.50 - $4.00 per follower.

3. Promoted trends
Twitter lists "Trending Topics" on most pages, letting users see which hashtags and topics are the most popular at any given moment. Promoted trends appear at the top of this list and are clearly labeled as "promoted."
You can place a bid on specific keywords so your promoted trend will appear on the list. Promoting a trend can cost about $200,000 per day or so, although costs vary depending on the timing.
You can combine promoted trends, accounts, and tweets together for even more marketing impact.
Note: Respond to comments
As you begin using Twitter for marketing, you may find that customers turn to the social media platform to comment on your business. For example, more than 100,000 Twitter questions and concerns are tweeted to US airlines each month.
When complaints, questions, or comments show up on the site about your business, it's not just Twitter users who can see them—it's everyone online. Being able to respond to these comments—both positive and negative—will help build your business's reputation.
