Frequently Asked Questions
Calculating keyword density is fairly simple, and only requires you to consider two numbers.
The two numbers you'll need before manually calculating your keyword density are:
- Number of times the target keyword appears in your content
- Total number of words on the page of content
After you have those two numbers, you'll simply divide the number of times your target keyword appears on a page by the total number of words on that page. The number you end up with is your keyword density.
The equation will look like this:
Number of times the keyword appears / Total number of words on the page = Keyword density
Keyword density is the number of times you use a target keyword on a webpage. The figure is in relation to the total number of words on page.
So, for example, if you use your target keyword twenty-five times on a 500-word article, your keyword density will be different than if you use the keyword twenty-five times on a page with 1000 words.
Keyword density is often expressed as a percentage and is useful to search engines since it helps them determine if your content is relevant to a specific query.
Google used to reward users for using a keyword in their content as many times as possible. Before the algorithm was advanced, using your keyword as many times as possible on a page was rewarded.
However, in recent years, Google has updated its algorithm to consider user intent, content quality, in addition to relevance. This drastically changed the school of thought that you could use a keyword on a page as many times as possible, and still rank highly in search.
Now, Google has labeled this kind of extensive keyword usage as keyword stuffing, and it can keep your pages from ranking highly in search.
So, why is calculating keyword density important? It's crucial that you know how often you use your keywords on any given page to determine if you're underusing it, using it perfectly, or overusing it.
- If you underuse your keyword, Google might not think its relevant to user searches about your target keyword.
- If you perfectly use your keyword, Google will consider your page relevant to queries regarding your target keyword, and you'll likely rank higher in search results because of the page's relevancy.
- If you overuse your keyword, Google will consider your page keyword-stuffed, and might see it as spam.
Your keyword density can help you determine where on the scale you fall, and help you tweak your content accordingly.
If it's easy enough to calculate your keyword density manually, why should you use a keyword density calculator?
- It's fast: If you have to manually calculate your keyword density for a few pages, it likely won't take that much time. But if you're auditing your entire website for keyword density, you'll find yourself performing math equations repeatedly. With a keyword density calculator, you can quickly calulate the keyword density of multiple pages in minutes.
- It's accurate: You won't have to worry about miscounting the keywords on your page, or the total word count of your content. With a keyword density calculator, you can rest assured that the numbers we use in our equations are 100% accurate. Our math is always right, too!
Every piece of content, every topic, and every industry is different. That said, there is no magic number when it comes to keyword density.
That said, the recommended keyword density hovers somewhere between 0.5% and 2.5% — staying below 3%.
