What Is Savable Content and How Can You Create It?

What is savable content?
Savable content is a term used to refer to content online that people want to save and come back to later, as opposed to just scrolling past it.
I see a lot of content in my newsfeed. And I read a lot of it, too. But most of the time, once I’m finished reading it, I just scroll on past and never see it again. Occasionally, though, I’ll like a page enough to save it so I can go back to it later.

It’s not uncommon for people to save content that they like when they encounter it in their newsfeeds or on social media, as well as on platforms like YouTube. And as a marketer, that’s really valuable to you.

What is savable content?
Savable content is content that people want to save. That’s it! It’s super straightforward.
There are all kinds of reasons someone might want to save content, some of which I’ll cover below. But whatever the reason, the idea is that instead of scrolling past something once they finish viewing it, someone saves it instead. They do this with the intention of coming back to it later to get more value from it.
What’s the benefit of creating savable content?
We’ve established that savable content results in more saves. But what’s the benefit of that? What do you get from people saving your content?
The short answer is, more saves means more engagement. And when it comes to social media marketing, engagement is the name of the game. When people engage with your content on a regular basis, they develop a connection with your brand that ultimately leads them to your website. The result is that many of them become customers, driving revenue.
Okay, so how do saves lead to more engagement? Here are a few ways this happens:
- Return visits: When people save content, they usually do it with the intention of coming back later. That means they engage with it multiple times instead of just once.
- Social proof: When people see that a social media post has a lot of saves, there’s a better chance that they’ll engage with it, since they’ll be interested to see what people like so much about it.
- Algorithm boosts: Social media platforms reward engagement, including saves. When a post gets saved a lot, the platform promotes it in more people’s feeds, leading to more engagement.
All of those things contribute to your social media engagement, and therefore to your sales and revenue.
5 tips for how to make content savable
If you’re sold on the importance of savable content, your next question is probably about how to make content savable. That’s why I’m going to outline several savable content tips below, including:
- Make your content actionable
- Educate your audience
- Provide entertainment
- Offer visual appeal
- Address pain points
Not every piece of savable content has to follow all of these tips. But it should follow at least one or two of them if you want to increase the number of saves it earns.
1. Make your content actionable
The first savable content tip to know is that you should make your content actionable in some way. That means it should help people do something that they couldn’t do (or, at least, couldn’t do as easily) beforehand.
For example, if you sell food or kitchen products, you might post a recipe. If the recipe is for something that people are interested in making, they might save it so they can use it later.
Other types of actionable content include checklists, how-to guides, tutorial videos, and more.
2. Educate your audience
Following in the same vein as the previous tip, educational content has a high potential to be savable. People like learning things, and if your content gives them the opportunity to do that, there’s a higher chance of them saving it. Either they’ll save it because they find it interesting enough to come back and reread, or they won’t have time to read it when they first see it, so they’ll save it to read it later.
Either way, using your content to educate people on topics relevant to your business or industry is a good way to make it more savable.
3. Provide entertainment
Another tip for how to make content savable is to make it entertaining. This one probably doesn’t come as a surprise. Who doesn’t like entertainment? Whether it’s a funny video or a snarky post, entertaining content has a way of drawing more engagement, including saves.
There’s also a chance that if someone saves a post they find funny, they’ll end up sending it to people they know, increasing your content’s reach.
4. Offer visual appeal
If you post a piece of content that’s visually appealing, there’s a higher chance of people saving it. That might mean sharing helpful charts and infographics. Or, it could mean posting photos — especially if you work in a highly visual field, like the fashion industry.
This visual approach is particularly effective on platforms like Pinterest and Instagram, which are so image-focused.
5. Address pain points
The final savable content tip is this: Address your audience’s pain points. When you hit on a common problem people experience, they’ll connect with it more. And you can then offer your brand’s products or services as the solution to that problem.
You can also combine this tip with the previous ones we’ve looked at. For example, Swiffer addressed pain points and utilized humor by creating a meme that featured several types of messes people commonly have to clean up.
