A sales pitch is a concise sales script that describes your business’s nature and the benefits you provide your customers. The goal of a sales pitch is to invite your prospect to take the next action of engaging with you, such as scheduling an appointment or booking a demo.

4. Jeep

A sales pitch that uses social proof convinces your prospects to try your product. After all, a third-party — not your business — is making the claim that your product is the solution that solves their pain points. In Jeep’s example, the award establishes the product as a good one worthy of being considered by car shoppers.

How do you write a sales pitch?

Writing a sales pitch is storytelling with a “hero’s journey” narrative. The story revolves around your hero, who is your prospect. With this in mind, here are some steps to take when writing your sales pitch:

  1. Understand your prospect’s needs
  2. Create an outline of your hero’s journey narrative
  3. Add social proof
  4. Conclude the pitch with a call to action

1. Understand your prospect’s needs

The first thing you must do when writing a sales pitch is understand your prospect’s needs. Different companies have unique circumstances, and you’ll want to tailor your sales pitch to each prospect.

You can learn more about your prospect’s pain points by doing the following:

  • Perform a Google search about the company and its industry.
  • Schedule a discovery call to ask them about the challenges they’re facing.
  • Ask open-ended questions to dig into their problems, and listen to their concerns.

Knowing your prospect’s pain points is an important first step, as it helps you communicate with them how your business and offerings can solve their problems.

2. Create an outline of your hero’s journey narrative

Make your storytelling engaging by following the “hero’s journey” narrative with your prospect as the hero. Your hero faces a challenge, finds a solution (your product or service), overcomes the hurdle with your offering, and becomes victorious.

Here’s a hero’s journey outline for your reference:

  • Introduction: Establish the context by giving a quick summary of where your hero is. How are they doing business, and what is their current market share?
  • Customer’s pain points: Introduce the problem that your hero faces. Are they struggling to grow their revenue? Are their sales figures down?
  • Solution: Introduce your product or service, discussing how your offering can solve your prospect’s problem. You can also briefly discuss how your offering has helped your other customers in the past.
  • Your prospect’s happily-ever-after: Discuss the benefits your prospect will get from using your product or service.

3. Add social proof

What’s the best way to show your prospect that you’re a reliable business that can address their needs? Let your past success paint a picture of how you can help your prospect.

Many other brands are pitching their business to your customers. Make yours stand out by establishing trust and credibility with awards or customer testimonials.

Include in your story a brief mention of other heroes you’ve helped. If one of your customers wrote a compelling one-liner testimonial, include it in your sales pitch deck.

4. Conclude the pitch with a call to action (CTA)

End your sales pitch with a clear CTA for your prospect. Give your prospect time to digest everything you’ve shared, and ask for their next open schedule for a follow-up call.

  4. Be ready for objections: After your sales pitch, your prospect may have follow-up questions and objections. Prepare answers for difficult questions that may arise.
