Types of YouTube ads

Before we dive into YouTube video ad examples, we want to break down the different types of ads available to your business. There are three main types of YouTube ads:

TrueView ads

TrueView ads are one type of YouTube ad you can run for your business.

These ads appear before, during, or after a video, as well as on the search results pages. TrueView ads are skippable. When you run an ad, you only pay if a user watches at least 30 seconds of it.

For ads that are less than 30 seconds, you won’t get charged unless your audience views the entire video. You can also get charged if someone clicks on a link in your ad, regardless of how long they watched. There are two different types of TrueView ads:

  1. In-stream: These ads play before, during, or after the YouTube video has played, and are skippable after five seconds.
  2. Discovery: Discovery ads show up on YouTube search results pages on the right-hand sidebar.

Pre-roll

Pre-roll ads play before, in the middle, or after a video. These ads can be up to 20 seconds long. The difference between pre-roll and TrueView ads is that viewers can’t skip pre-roll ads.

Bumper ads

Bumper ads are non-skippable ads in YouTube videos.

These ads are typically only six seconds long and appear as banners before or during videos. Bumper ads are great for building brand recognition by offering a unique angle on your ad campaign and make a memorable impact on your audience.
