What is website ranking traffic?

Website ranking traffic refers to traffic that comes to your website from search engine rankings, or search engine results pages.  For example, if someone searches for something in Google, finds a link to a page on your website in the results, and clicks on it — that click contributes to your search traffic. Bear in mind that search traffic is not the only kind of site traffic you can receive. People can find your site through social media, emails, other websites, and ads. All traffic sources are useful, but when you’re dealing with SEO, traffic from search engine rankings is what you’ll want to track.

Why should you care about search traffic?

Search traffic is the marker of a successful SEO campaign. SEO involves optimizing your web content to rank in relevant search engine results where interested users can find it.

So, the amount of search traffic you earn is a direct result of the quality of your SEO campaign. Since website ranking traffic is a direct reflection of your SEO campaign, monitoring site traffic is crucial. Let’s say a particular page makes it relatively high in Google search results for a given keyword — but that page’s search traffic is very low. The low search traffic tells you that despite its reasonably good spot in rankings, not many people click on your page. As a result, you now know to further optimize that page.

How can you measure your website ranking traffic?

Viewing your website’s search traffic is easy.

To start, you need to select a platform that can analyze traffic on your site. Several paid platforms like Ahrefs come with this feature, but you can access it for free with Google Analytics. After you set up your Analytics account and give it enough time to collect data from your site, you can look at your traffic. You don’t have to dig for it, either — Analytics automatically pulls various metrics from your site and organizes them in graphs and reports. To see how much traffic your site gets and where it’s coming from, you can navigate to the “user acquisition” section in Analytics.

There, you can view charts showing exactly how much traffic you’re earning from organic search results over a period of time.   google analytics user acquisition graphYou can also compare your organic traffic numbers to other traffic sources, like paid advertising.

How can you improve your search traffic?

Finding your website ranking traffic is just the start. From there, you want to put that information to good use by improving your traffic. But how can you do that? Here are three tips for bringing more people to your site through Google!

1. Write compelling title tags and meta descriptions

When users encounter your site in search results, they’ll see a single blurb of text. That blurb is composed of two elements: A title tag and a meta description. If you want users to click on the link, you need to write engaging titles and metas that encourage users to visit your site to read more. For your title tag, try incorporating numbers and emotive adjectives.

An example title tag could be “10 Breathtaking Ways to Redecorate Your Home.” The number 10 jumps out at users and catches their eye, while “breathtaking” conveys highly positive emotions about your content. Your meta description, meanwhile, should aim to tell users exactly what they’ll find on your page while also being persuasive and compelling. You should briefly summarize the purpose of the page, but do so using emotive adjectives to draw in users.

2. Focus on user search intent

One of the biggest things that will keep users from clicking on your content is a failure to meet user search intent. Search intent describes the reason users searched for a given term. Essentially, your page should provide users with what they want. If you write a blog post that targets the keyword “how umbrellas work,” but the page focuses more on promoting your umbrella products, it won’t do very well in search results — and it likely won’t generate much traffic. When you write to satisfy search intent, you’ll give users a compelling reason to click, and your search traffic will significantly increase.

3. Optimize your page load speeds

Did you know that 83% of Internet users expect the pages they visit to load in three seconds or less? If your site doesn’t meet this expectation, you’ll end up with a lot of users hitting the “back” button before the page even loads. When that happens, it causes you to have a high bounce rate, which could contribute to your low search traffic. If you want those users to stick around, you must optimize your page speeds.

You can do that in a few different ways, including:

When your pages load quickly, users won’t be as inclined to bounce, and you’ll end up with a higher amount of search traffic.
